Are You a Chocoholic?

We all feel happier after eating chocolate, and just being happy gives your immune system a jump-start.

But there’s more to it than that; chocolate is a source of immune-boosting phytochemicals. Bananas are nature’s miracle fast-food, providing energy and essential nutrients that the body needs in order to stay fit and well.

The benefits of friendly bacteria, a good dose of your daily requirement of calcium, and the mood-enhancing benefits in nutmeg mean you’ll soon be back for more of this one.




Serves 2

1 banana 400ml or 14fl oz plain live yoghurt

1 heaped tbsp organic chocolate powder

2 small pinches of nutmeg

Note: This delicious smoothie works just as well if you substitute six large strawberries for the banana.


1. Peel and chop the banana.

2. Put the banana into a blender with the yoghurt and chocolate powder.

3. Whizz until smooth.

4. Serve with the nutmeg sprinkled on top.

Theobromine from chocolate and myristicine from nutmeg are two plant chemicals that have mood-enhancing properties. Nutmeg also helps sleep and improves digestion, both of which are good for the immune system. Beneficial bacteria in live yoghurt produce by-products that are absorbed directly through the intestinal lining and play a very important part in strengthening natural immunity. Potassium from the banana and calcium from the yoghurt are just an added bonus.
