Peppery Strawberries

The first time I saw my friend grind black pepper over her strawberries I thought she’d actually flipped. But once I’d tasted this traditional Mediterranean culinary trick, I realized why people did it.

The pepper somehow magnifies the flavour of strawberries and makes them even more delicious.

Combining that taste with luscious, ripe melon makes this a memorable drink. Because you are using the whole fruit, it’s filling and substantial:the perfect alternative as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon sustaining snack.

Serves 1-2

1 cantaloupe melon

225g or 8oz strawberries

Still mineral water

Freshly ground black pepper

 

1. Peel and de-seed the melon.

2. Hull the strawberries.

3. Put them both in a blender and whizz.

4. Thin to the desired consistency with mineral water.

5. Serve with a few twists of pepper in each glass.

 

Vital statistics

Melon is a good source of folic acid, potassium, and vitamins. The strawberries not only provide generous quantities of betacarotene, they’re also valuable in the relief of arthritic pain; contrary to popular myth which says they’re acidic and bad for people with joint problems, they are really beneficial. This drink is a good source of fibre and quick-release energy, thanks to the natural fruit sugars that are abundant in these two fruits.
