‘Rum Deal’ Vitality Drink
I first drank pawpaw juice served with limes and the local sugar-cane rum on a small boat in the Amazon rain forest of Brazil. Unfortunately, it tastes like the most delicious chilled fruit juice, and for somebody like me who seldom drinks, three glasses of this delicious and refreshing drink left me stupefied – not revitalized. However, I’ve learned from my mistake that using lots of ice and making one drink last a long time on a very hot day is both cooling and revitalizing. It’s also very sociable, so try it at your next barbecue.
4 tbsp white rum
1. Peel the pawpaws, scrape out the, and then juice them.
2. Squeeze the juice from the limes. Add to the pawpaw juice, along with the rum.
3. Serve over crushed ice.
In fact, this drink is perfect before a barbecue, which tends to be a bit heavy on meat, as the digestive enzyme papaine helps the breakdown and absorption of meat proteins. Add lots of vitamin C from the lime as well as all the immune-boosting nutrients in the pawpaws and you’ve got a real boost to your vitality – as long as you don’t overdo the rum …
