This spicy variation on the traditional Indian lassi will give an instant lift to anybody’s flagging vitality.

The stimulating effects of ginger, the beneficial bacteria in the yoghurt and the digestive benefits of mint all work together to give your vitality a welcome lift just when you need one.

4cm or 1-1/2-inch piece fresh ginger

250ml or 9fl oz plain live yoghurt

About 10 mint leaves (and 4 small sprigs for garnish)

Chilled sparkling mineral water, to taste

 

1. Peel and grate the ginger.

2. Put the yoghurt, ginger, and mint leaves in a blender and whizz until smooth.

3. Mix with the mineral water to your desired consistency.

4. Pour into glasses and serve with the mint sprigs floating on top.

 

Vital statistics

It’s the circulatory enhancing effect of zingiberene and the gingerols that make ginger such a powerful stimulant. The hotness of this spice is offset by the coolness of the yoghurt, which supplies valuable quantities of calcium, some protein, B vitamins, and the important probiotic bacteria that are so essential for immunity and good digestion.
