Watermelon Smoothie

Watermelon Smoothie

Watermelon is the ultimate in cooling fruits; just the sight of them piled by the roadside is enough to make you salivate.

Blended here with live yoghurt, it makes the perfect cooler, whether you’re at home or somewhere hot where the watermelons grow. Leave the chunks of watermelon in the fridge for at least half an hour before blending to make sure you get a cold smoothie.

Smoothies and juices Serves 2-3

1 medium watermelon

125ml or 4fl oz plain live yoghurt

1. Peel the watermelon and remove the seeds.

2. Cut into chunks.

3. Whizz in a blender or food processor with the yoghurt.

Vital statistics

There are not a lot of basic nutrients in watermelon, but like all red fruits, it does contain protective antioxidants and small quantities of valuable phytochemicals. The yoghurt will provide calcium, and it also contains live bacteria that are beneficial to the digestion. One of live bacteria’s major roles is to protect against harmful gut bacteria which cause food poisoning.

If you’re on holiday where it’s hot enough to grow the watermelon, the risk of food poisoning will be there, too, so this smoothie gives you the double benefit of being cooling and protective.
